Trip Description

The Annapurna Thorong La Pass Trek is one of Nepal’s most iconic high-altitude treks, offering a mix of stunning Himalayan landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and challenging terrain. Part of the famous Annapurna Circuit, it culminates at Thorong La Pass (5,416 m), one of the highest trekking passes in the world. The trek passes through diverse landscapes, from lush forests and terraced fields to alpine meadows and rocky highlands.

Along the route, trekkers visit traditional Gurung, Manangi, and Tibetan-influenced villages such as Dharapani, Chame, Pisang, Manang, and Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site. Highlights include encounters with yak herders, alpine flora, and breathtaking views of peaks like Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Tilicho, and Machapuchare.

The trek typically takes 12–14 days and is considered moderate to strenuous due to long days and high altitude. Proper acclimatization and pacing are essential. The best seasons are spring and autumn, offering clear skies and spectacular mountain vistas. Lodges along the trail provide basic accommodation and meals, allowing trekkers to experience the remote region comfortably.

Detailed Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kathmandu's international airport, a “We Trek & Expeditions” representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Boudhanath, a peaceful area known for its iconic stupa.

After check-in, you can rest or explore the area, depending on your arrival time. In the evening, there will be a briefing session about the trek. 

You’ll also enjoy a “Welcome Dinner”  Depending on each participant's arrival time, the "Welcome Dinner" may be changed to a "Farewell Dinner" on the last day.

After an early breakfast in Kathmandu, begin your journey towards the Annapurna region, heading to Jagat (1,120 m), the starting point of the Annapurna Thorong La Pass trek. The drive takes approximately 7–8 hours, passing through the scenic Prithvi Highway, winding rivers, terraced fields, and traditional villages.

Upon arrival in Jagat, check into your lodge and rest. Take some time to prepare your gear for the trekking days ahead and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of this small village along the Marsyangdi River.

Today’s trek begins from Jagat (1,120 m), following the Marsyangdi River through terraced fields, small villages, and forested trails. You will pass several charming settlements, crossing suspension bridges and enjoying views of the surrounding hills and river valleys.

The trail gradually ascends through bamboo and pine forests, leading to Dharapani (1,975 m), a traditional Gurung village. Upon arrival, check into your lodge, enjoy lunch, and take a short walk around the village to experience local culture and scenic views of the Annapurna foothills.

Trekking Time: 6–7 hrs, Distance: ~18 km, Elevation: +855m, Accommodation: Lodge, Meals: B L D, Sleeping Elevation: 1,975 m

From Dharapani (1,975 m), the trail gradually ascends along the Marsyangdi River, passing through terraced fields, pine forests, and small Gurung villages. The path is scenic, offering views of the surrounding hills and distant Annapurna peaks.

As you trek, you pass Bagarchhap and Danaque, enjoying tea breaks and the local village ambiance. The ascent becomes more noticeable in the afternoon, leading to Chame (2,715 m), the district headquarters of Manang, known for its hot springs and panoramic Himalayan views.

From Chame (2,715 m), the trail ascends gradually through pine and rhododendron forests, passing traditional Gurung villages and terraced fields. Along the way, you can enjoy stunning views of Lamjung Himal, Annapurna II, and Pisang Peak.

The trail becomes steeper as you approach Upper Pisang, offering panoramic vistas of the Manang valley and surrounding snow-capped peaks. Upon arrival at Pisang (3,314 m), check into your lodge and rest, preparing for the next day’s trek to Ngawal and Manang.

We continue our journey facing the gigantic Annapurna barrier, whose peaks reach over 7,000 meters above sea level. An exceptional setting! 

Explore the upper Marsyangdi Valley via a variation of the historic trail, now covered by the motorable track that leads to Manang. From Pisang, a beautiful balcony trail allows us to discover the old Tibetan villages of Ghyaru and Ngawal. We arrive in Ngawal in the afternoon. We visit the village and its monastery.

A beautiful day of hiking on a balcony trail overlooking the valley. We then descend and follow the river to reach the village of Braka. We can visit the village and its old monastery before continuing to Manang. A restful afternoon in Manang. For those who wish, there is the option of an acclimatization walk to Gangapurna Lake, or climbing to the promontory overlooking the lake and the village.

From Manang, the trail begins a steady ascent through rocky terrain and alpine meadows. You pass through sparse vegetation and grazing areas, dotted with yak herders’ settlements. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak.

The trek gradually climbs to Yak Kharka, a small yak grazing settlement that serves as a high-altitude stop before reaching Thorong La Pass. The air becomes thinner, so take frequent rests, hydrate, and enjoy the stunning alpine scenery.

Elevation Gain: +670 m, Trekking Time: 4–5 hrs, Distance: ~10 km, Accommodation: Lodge, Meals: B L D, Sleeping Elevation: 4,220 m

Today’s trek continues with a gradual ascent through rocky trails and sparse alpine vegetation. You pass yak grazing areas and high-altitude meadows while enjoying panoramic views of Annapurna I, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak.

The trail becomes steeper as you approach Thorong Phedi, the base camp for Thorong La Pass. Upon arrival, check into the lodge and rest early to prepare for the early morning crossing of Thorong La Pass. Take short walks to help acclimatize and hydrate well to reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

Elevation Gain: +404 m, Trekking Time: 3–4 hrs, Distance: ~6 km, Accommodation: Lodge, Meals: B L D, Sleeping Elevation: 4,624 m

Today is the highlight of the trek: crossing the Thorong La Pass, one of the highest trekking passes in the world. Start very early in the morning, often around 4:00–5:00 AM, to avoid strong winds and enjoy clear mountain views. The trail is steep and challenging, but every step rewards you with panoramic vistas of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri peaks.

After several hours of steady climbing, reach Thorong La Pass (5,416 m). Take time to celebrate your achievement, take photos, and enjoy the breathtaking 360° Himalayan panorama. From the pass, descend gradually through rocky terrain, yak pastures, and small settlements to Muktinath (3,802 m), a sacred pilgrimage site revered by both Hindus and Buddhists.

Today’s trek begins with a descent from Muktinath (3,802 m) through alpine landscapes, yak pastures, and small villages. The trail passes through Lupra, a traditional Tibetan-influenced village known for its stone houses and peaceful surroundings.

Continue descending along the Kali Gandaki Valley, enjoying views of Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, and Tukuche peaks. Arrive in Jomsom (2,700 m), a bustling market town and gateway to the Annapurna region, where you can rest, explore the town, or prepare for the onward flight or trek.

After breakfast in Jomsom, take a short scenic flight to Pokhara (827 m). The flight offers breathtaking aerial views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, the Kali Gandaki Valley, and the terraced hillsides of the region.

Upon arrival in Pokhara, check into your hotel and spend the day relaxing by Phewa Lake, exploring the lakeside area, or visiting nearby attractions such as Devi’s Fall, Gupteshwor Cave, or the World Peace Pagoda. This is a perfect time to unwind after the long Annapurna circuit trek.

After breakfast, depart Pokhara for the return journey to Kathmandu. You have the option of taking a scenic flight (25 minutes) over the Himalayan ranges, offering stunning aerial views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machapuchare, and the Pokhara valley, or a 5–6 hour drive along the Prithvi Highway, following rivers, hills, and picturesque villages.

Upon arrival in Kathmandu (1,400 m), check into your hotel. Spend the afternoon at leisure for shopping, exploring, or visiting cultural landmarks before concluding your journey.

Today, you’ll explore some of Kathmandu’s most iconic cultural and spiritual landmarks.

 

We start with a visit to Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) for panoramic views of the valley and a peaceful Buddhist atmosphere. Then, we head to Patan Durbar Square, known for its stunning Newari architecture and rich artistic heritage. Finally, we visit Pashupatinath, Nepal’s most sacred Hindu temple, located on the banks of the Bagmati River.

 

After the tour, enjoy free time in the evening to relax or shop.
