Trip Description

The Gokyo and Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the most spectacular and rewarding journeys in the Everest region of Nepal, combining two of the Khumbu’s most iconic destinations, Gokyo Valley and Everest Base Camp (EBC). This route offers a perfect blend of breathtaking scenery, rich Sherpa culture, and thrilling high-altitude adventure.

Starting with a scenic flight to Lukla (2,860 m), the trek follows the classic Everest trail through vibrant Sherpa villages like Phakding and Namche Bazaar, the bustling mountain hub of the Khumbu. From Namche, the trail diverts toward the serene Gokyo Valley, where you’ll explore the turquoise Gokyo Lakes, sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus, surrounded by snow-capped giants. A hike up Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) rewards you with one of the most panoramic views in the Himalayas, showcasing Mount Everest (8,848 m), Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu in a single sweeping vista.

The adventure continues with a dramatic crossing of the Cho La Pass (5,420 m), linking Gokyo with the Everest Base Camp trail. Trekking through Dzongla and Lobuche, you’ll finally reach the legendary Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), the launching point for mountaineers aiming for the summit of the world’s highest peak. A sunrise climb to Kala Patthar (5,545 m) the next morning offers unforgettable close-up views of Everest and its neighboring peaks.

Throughout the journey, trekkers experience authentic Sherpa hospitality, ancient monasteries, fluttering prayer flags, and awe-inspiring landscapes of glaciers, lakes, and towering peaks.

This trek is ideal for experienced hikers seeking a challenging yet deeply rewarding Himalayan experience. With its diverse scenery, cultural richness, and two major highlights, Gokyo Ri and Everest Base Camp, this route stands as one of Nepal’s most complete and beautiful trekking adventures.

Detailed Itinerary

Upon arrival at Kathmandu's international airport, a “We Trek & Expeditions” representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Boudhanath, a peaceful area known for its iconic stupa.

After check-in, you can rest or explore the area, depending on your arrival time. In the evening, there will be a briefing session about the trek.

You’ll also enjoy a “Welcome Dinner” with the guide and all participants. Depending on each participant's arrival time, the "Welcome Dinner" may be changed to a "Farewell Dinner" on the last day.

Transportation: Private Tourist Vehicle, Accom.: Hotel, Meals: Dinner, Sleeping Elevation: 1400M

Your adventure truly begins today. After an early breakfast (or packed breakfast, depending on flight time), we head to the airport for our scenic flight to Lukla, a gateway to the Everest region. The short but thrilling flight offers incredible views of the Himalayan range and drops us into the heart of the mountains at Tenzing Hillary Airport, one of the world’s most dramatic airstrips.

Important Note: Occasionally, due to air traffic regulations or weather conditions, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal may reroute all Lukla flights from Kathmandu to Ramechhap Airport (approx. 4–5 hours drive from Kathmandu). In this case, we will leave your hotel in Kathmandu around 3:00 AM and have breakfast on the way before boarding the flight from Ramechhap.

Upon landing in Lukla, you’ll meet your porter and trekking crew. After some time to organize gear, we begin our trek with a gentle downhill walk along the Dudh Koshi River, passing small Sherpa villages, prayer stones, and suspension bridges.

Our destination today is Phakding, a peaceful village nestled along the riverside. After checking into a local teahouse, you can rest or explore the area before enjoying a warm dinner.

Flight Duration: 25-30 Min, Trekking Time: 3 Hrs, Trekking Distance: 8 KM, Accom: Lodge, Meals: BLD, Sleeping Elevation: 2610M

Today’s trek takes us deeper into the Khumbu region as we make our way to the vibrant mountain town of Namche Bazaar, the gateway to Everest.

After breakfast in Phakding, we begin our journey following the banks of the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several thrilling suspension bridges draped with colorful prayer flags. The trail winds through beautiful pine forests and passes traditional villages like Monjo and Jorsalle, where we enter Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From Jorsalle, the trail becomes more challenging, with a steady and steep uphill climb toward Namche. But the effort is rewarding, on a clear day, you may catch your first glimpse of Mount Everest peeking behind the ridges.

After a final push, we reach Namche Bazaar, a bustling Sherpa town nestled in a natural amphitheater. With its cafés, shops, bakeries, and mountain gear stores, Namche offers a perfect blend of tradition and modern comfort in the high Himalayas.

You’ll have time to rest, explore the town, or simply relax and take in the stunning mountain views.

Trekking Time: 5-6 Hrs, Trekking Distance: 10-11KM, Elevation Gain: 830M approx., Accom: Lodge, Meals: BLD, Sleeping Elevation: 3440M

Today is an important acclimatization day to help your body adjust to the altitude. Instead of resting completely, we take a scenic hike to higher elevations and return to Namche to sleep, a key method for safe altitude adjustment.

After breakfast, we hike to the nearby village of Khumjung (3,790m), a beautiful Sherpa settlement nestled beneath the sacred peak Khumbila. Here, we visit the famous Khumjung Monastery, which is believed to house a scalp of a Yeti, adding a touch of Himalayan legend to our journey.

On the way, we’ll also enjoy panoramic views of Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and other iconic peaks.

After exploring Khumjung, we return to Namche Bazaar for lunch and a relaxed afternoon, perfect for strolling through the town, visiting the Sherpa museum, or enjoying a cup of coffee at one of the local bakeries.

Hiking Time: 4/5 Hrs, Accom: Lodge, Meals: BLD, Sleeping Elevation: 3440M

Today’s trek marks your first real ascent into the upper reaches of the Gokyo Valley, leaving behind the bustling trading town of Namche Bazaar and heading toward the quieter alpine pastures of Dole. The route offers a peaceful change of scenery, fewer trekkers, more wildlife, and expansive views of Himalayan giants like Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kangtega.

Hiking Time:5-6 Hrs, Distance: Approx. 11 Km, Elevation: +670m, Accom: Lodge, Meals: BLD, Sleeping Elevation: 4110m

Today’s trek continues your gradual ascent through the serene upper Gokyo Valley. Leaving behind the small settlement of Dole, the trail climbs steadily along the valley’s western side, passing through the small villages of Lhabarma and Luza before reaching Machermo. The scenery opens up to broad alpine meadows dotted with grazing yaks, and the views of Cho Oyu (8,188 m), Kangtega, and Thamserku become increasingly impressive. The thinner air will be noticeable, so an easy and steady pace is recommended. Upon arrival in Machermo, you can rest, explore the village, or take a short acclimatization hike to nearby ridges for stunning panoramas of the surrounding peaks.

Hiking Time: 3-4 Hrs, Distance: Approx. 4 Km, Elevation: +270m, Accom: Lodge, Meals: BLD, Sleeping Elevation: 4470m

Today’s trek leads you higher into the upper Gokyo Valley, following a gentle climb alongside the Dudh Koshi River. The trail ascends past Pangka (4,480 m) and then climbs a steep ridge to the moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in Nepal.

As you continue, you’ll pass by a series of stunning turquoise lakes — Longponga Tsho (1st Lake, 4,650 m) and Taujung Tsho (2nd Lake, 4,710 m) — before reaching Gokyo Village, beautifully set beside Dudh Pokhari (3rd Gokyo Lake). The view of Cho Oyu (8,188 m) rising beyond the shimmering lake is truly spectacular.

Hiking Time: 4 Hrs, Distance: 7 Km, Elevation: +320m, Accom: Lodge, Meals: BLD, Sleeping Elevation: 4790m

Today is one of the most scenic and rewarding days of the trek. Begin early in the morning to climb Gokyo Ri (5,357 m), a steep but non-technical ascent that offers some of the best panoramic views in the entire Everest region.

From the summit, you’ll witness breathtaking vistas of Mount Everest (8,848 m), Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and the vast Ngozumpa Glacier stretching below. The shimmering Gokyo Lakes add to the unforgettable scenery.

After spending some time soaking in the views, descend back to Gokyo Village for breakfast. Later, continue your trek eastward, crossing the Ngozumpa Glacier carefully over rocky and undulating terrain to reach Dragnag (Thaknak), a small settlement at the foot of the Cho La Pass.

Hiking Time: 5-6 Hrs, Distance: 6-7 Km, Elevation: +567/-667m, Accom: Lodge, Meals: BLD, Sleeping Elevation: 4690m

Today is one of the most demanding and adventurous days of the trek as you cross the Cho La Pass (5,350 m), a high-altitude glacial pass connecting the Gokyo Valley with the Everest Base Camp trail.

The day begins early with a steady climb through rocky terrain, gradually steepening as you approach the glacier. The ascent to the pass involves navigating snow or ice (depending on the season), and trekking poles or microspikes can be useful for stability.

From the top of Cho La Pass, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Ama Dablam, Cholatse, and Baruntse, along with vast Himalayan landscapes. After spending some time at the pass, begin a steep and careful descent over loose rocks and icy sections before reaching the valley floor.

The final section to Dzongla is gentler, leading you to a scenic settlement with dramatic mountain backdrops, a perfect place to rest after the day’s challenge.

Hiking Time: 6-7 Hrs, Distance: 7-8 Km, Elevation: +660m, Accom: Lodge, Meals: BLD, Sleeping Elevation: 4840m

Today’s trek is relatively short and relaxing compared to the previous challenging day over Cho La Pass. The trail from Dzongla descends slightly and then contours along the ridge, offering magnificent views of Ama Dablam, Cholatse, and the Khumbu Glacier valley ahead.

The path gradually ascends through a rocky and grassy landscape until it joins the main Everest Base Camp trail near Lobuche. This section provides a peaceful transition from the isolated Cho La route to the bustling high-altitude trekking corridor leading toward Everest Base Camp.

Hiking Time: 2-3 Hrs, Distance: 6 Km, Elevation: +100m, Accom: Lodge, Meals: BLD, Sleeping Elevation: 4940m

Today is the highlight of the entire trek, the journey to the iconic Everest Base Camp (EBC). The trail from Lobuche follows the edge of the Khumbu Glacier, gradually ascending through rocky moraines and rugged terrain toward Gorak Shep, the last settlement before Everest Base Camp.

After a brief rest and lunch at Gorak Shep (5,164 m), continue the trek to Everest Base Camp (5,300 m). The path undulates across rocky glacial debris, offering spectacular views of the Khumbu Icefall, Nuptsé, Pumori, and the surrounding Himalayan giants.

Reaching Everest Base Camp is a deeply rewarding moment, a chance to stand at the foot of the world’s highest mountain. Take time for photos and to soak in the atmosphere before retracing your steps back to Gorak Shep for the night.

Hiking Time: 6-7 Hrs, Distance: 12 Km, Elevation: +360/-136m, Accom: Lodge, Meals: BLD, Sleeping Elevation: 5164m

Today begins early with a rewarding hike to Kala Patthar (5,545m), the best viewpoint to witness a breathtaking panorama of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and the surrounding Himalayan giants at sunrise.

After soaking in the incredible views and taking plenty of photos, we begin our descent back down the valley. The trek continues past Gorakshep, gradually descending through Lobuche, and on to the traditional Sherpa village of Pangboche.

The descent is long but scenic, passing through alpine landscapes, pine forests, and terraced fields, giving you a chance to reflect on your incredible journey.

Hiking Time: 7/8Hrs, Distance: 15KM, Elevation Gain: 380M Approx. (Gorakshep to Kala Patthar), Accom: Lodge, Meals: BLD, Sleeping Elevation: 3985M

Today, we begin our descent from Pangboche toward Namche Bazaar, passing through the spiritual village of Tengboche, famous for its stunning Tengboche Monastery, one of the largest and most important Buddhist monasteries in the region.

Here, you can take time to explore the monastery, enjoy panoramic views of Ama Dablam, and soak in the peaceful atmosphere.

After the visit, we continue descending through pine forests and Sherpa villages until we arrive back at Namche Bazaar, where you’ll have time to rest, shop, and enjoy the lively mountain town.

Hiking Time: 7Hrs, Distance: 14KM, Elevation Change: 545M Approx.(Decend), Accom: Lodge, Meals: BLD, Sleeping Elevation: 3440M

Today, we complete the trek by descending from Namche Bazaar back to Lukla. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi River, passing through beautiful forests, Sherpa villages like Phakding, and multiple suspension bridges.

It’s a long day but mostly downhill, giving you a chance to reflect on your amazing journey through the Everest region.

Upon arrival in Lukla, you can relax and celebrate the accomplishment with your trekking team.

Hiking Time: 6/7Hrs, Elevation Loss: 600M, Accom: Lodge, Meals: BLD, Sleeping Elevation: 2840M

After breakfast, we take a short scenic flight from Lukla to either Kathmandu or Ramechhap, depending on current aviation regulations and traffic conditions.

Important Note: Sometimes, due to changes made by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, flights from Lukla operate to Ramechhap Airport instead of Kathmandu. In that case, a private vehicle will transfer you from Ramechhap to Kathmandu (approx. 4–5 hours by road).

Additionally, the Lukla–Kathmandu/Ramechhap flight is highly weather-dependent and may be delayed or cancelled. To account for this, we have scheduled a buffer/safety day in Kathmandu the following day to ensure you don’t miss your international flight or further travel plans.

Flight Time: 25-35 Mins, Accommodation: Hotel, Meals: B, Sleeping Elevation: 1400M

Today, you’ll explore some of Kathmandu’s most iconic cultural and spiritual landmarks.

We start with a visit to Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) for panoramic views of the valley and a peaceful Buddhist atmosphere. Then, we head to Patan Durbar Square, known for its stunning Newari architecture and rich artistic heritage. Finally, we visit Pashupatinath, Nepal’s most sacred Hindu temple, located on the banks of the Bagmati River.

After the tour, enjoy free time in the evening to relax or shop.

City Tour: 5/6Hrs, Transportation: Private Tourist vehicle, Meals: Breakfast, Sleeping Elevation: 1400M

Today marks the end of your unforgettable journey in the Himalayas. At the scheduled time, a representative of “We Trek” will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your flight home or onward travel.
